ASPIS Open Symposium 2023 and ONTOX contribution
 | |
The ASPIS Open Symposium, annually organised by the ASPIS cluster, occurred on 14 & 15 September in Ljubljana, Slovenia, after the EUROTOX. A spectrum of experts discussed the implementation of the New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in chemical risk assessment.
| |
| |
ONTOX actively contributed to the programme. Mathieu Vinken (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) chaired the initial sessions, laying the groundwork for upcoming discussions on establishing the Next Generation Risk Assessment framework based on NAMs.
| |
 | |
Thomas Hartung (Johns Hopkins University) provided an impressive overview of methods for probabilistic risk assessment. Job Berkhout (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, RIVM) presented his outstanding poster, “Towards a virtual embryo”, as a selected flash talk.
| |

Anouk Verhoeven (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) was granted the ASPIS Best Poster Award. Her work, "An updated adverse outcome pathway network on chemical-induced liver steatosis", can identify data and knowledge gaps, advancing predictive non-animal approaches for modern human risk assessment.

Video interviews with ONTOX scientists
| |
The ASPIS cluster formed by ONTOX, PrecisionTox, and RISK-HUNT3R, was very active in disseminating its results during the past months. Researchers from ASPIS' projects were present in the ASPIS booth at the SOT Conference in March (Nashville, USA), WC12 Canada in August (Niagara Falls, Canada) and also at the EUROTOX Congress in September (Ljubljana, Slovenia).
Among them were many ONTOX scientists, providing inputs on ONTOX's contribution to a sustainable, animal-free and reliable chemical risk assessment of tomorrow. Moreover, ONTOX coordinator Mathieu Vinken and ONTOX scientists Eliška Kuchovská (IUF – Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine), Nynke Kramer (Wageningen University & Research), Harm Heusinkveld (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, RIVM) and Michael G. Diemar (3Rs Management and Consulting ApS) revealed their motivations to attend these inspirational events and what they expected from them.

EUROTOX podcast with Simón Perera
 | |
In the EUROTOX podcast's third episode, Simón Perera (ProtoQSAR) introduced the world of computational toxicology to listeners. Simón uncovered how he went from molecular anthropology to in silico technologies and why many still view revolutionary tools as mysterious “black boxes”.

ASPIS LGBTQIA+ community in science
 | |
ONTOX consortium proudly supports the LGBTIQA+ community and celebrates diversity. During Pride Month, the ASPIS cluster (ONTOX, PrecisionTox, and RISK-HUNT3R) and ALTERTOX Academy prepared an online LGBTIQA+ inclusion in STEM event.
