Liesbet Geris granted an Honorary PhD
|
|
| |
The University of Amsterdam has awarded an honorary PhD to Prof. Liesbet Geris, recognising her contributions to the Virtual Human Twin—an innovative computational framework revolutionising biomedical research.
“A digital twin is a computer model of a product, process, or system. It makes predictions that can be used to intervene. In healthcare, this means creating personalised computer models of cells, tissues, or even entire bodies. These models help us understand diseases better and predict the most effective treatments," explains Liesbet.

|
|
| |
Liesbet Geris is a Research Professor in Biomechanics and Computational Tissue Engineering at the University of Liège and KU Leuven in Belgium, the scientific coordinator of the Prometheus – a platform for skeletal tissue engineering, and executive director of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute (VPHi).
As part of the ONTOX project, her work is leading the integration of data, AI, and ontology, developing physiological and ontology maps for key organs, such as the liver, kidney and brain, to assess systemic toxicity.

#YoungScientist interviews Anna Rapisarda
 | |
Anna Rapisarda is a Postdoctoral Researcher & Project Manager at the University of Valencia and CIBEREHD.
Anna was motivated to join the ONTOX to get the chance to help reduce the use of animals in chemical risk assessment. She is inspired by ONTOX’s vision to develop reliable, more accurate, ethical alternatives that prioritise human health without relying on animal testing. She finds that contributing to a project that aims to advance toxicology in this way is something significant.

Bernard Staumont
 | |
Bernard Staumont is a Project Manager & Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Liège.
Bernard is motivated to work in ONTOX because of the interdisciplinary environment and the opportunity to learn from many experts and work together on developing New Approach Methodologies to reduce animal testing. In ONTOX, Bernard focuses on creating physiological and ontology maps – sophisticated in silico tools visually representing biological processes.
