Hackathon: Disruptive ideas to reduce animal testing
 | |
The ONTOX Hackathon, “Hack to save lives and avoid animal suffering,” took place from 21 to 23 April 2024 at the Utrecht Science Park. Seasoned experts and young scientists joined the hackathon to address critical challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in toxicology.
| |
| |
Participants worked effortfully to explore methods and ideas to accelerate the transition from animal testing to more human-relevant, robust and ethical approaches. This stimulating initiative provided several groundbreaking ideas.

Three years of ONTOX: Transforming toxicology
 | |
The ONTOX consortium highlighted its commitment to develop functional and sustainable solutions for 21st-century toxicity testing and Next-Generation Risk Assessment principles during the 3rd Annual meeting, held on 24-25 April 2024 in Utrecht.
| |
| |
The event, subtitled "Getting Ontologies and Probabilistic Risk Assessment into Shape," highlighted Probabilistic Risk Assessment as a paradigm shift from hazard-based to risk-based assessment, with the future implementation of New Approach Methodologies.
| |
 | |
The Scientific Advisory Board expressed satisfaction with the ONTOX results. The Young Scientist Best Poster Award was granted to Bernard Staumont (Université de Liège) for his outstanding work “From Physiological Maps to Disease Ontology Maps Using a Systems Biology Approach.”

ASPIS Academy at the ESTIV 2024
ASPIS Academy training session "Shaping the Future of Chemical Risk Assessment: Insights from ASPIS Academy" will take place during the established 22nd International Congress of the European Society of Toxicology In Vitro (ESTIV 2024).
This inaugural conference lunch session on 4 June will be a testament to the invaluable contributions of Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) across the three projects of the ASPIS cluster (ONTOX, PrecisionTox, and RISK-HUNT3R).
During the session, chaired by Eliska Kuchovska and Luiz Ladeira, you will find out how the ASPIS Academy aims to bolster the careers of aspiring researchers while advancing the overarching mission and vision of ASPIS.
Presentations by ESRs will provide insights into each ASPIS project:
-Devon Barnes (ONTOX): Simulating kidney tubular crystallopathy in vitro
-Heeseung Jo (RISK-HUNT3R): Towards an Animal Free Framework for Chemical Safety
-Shaleen Glasgow (PrecisionTox): Comparing the transcriptomes of Daphnia and zebrafish for the evolutionary conservation of a gene network for fatty liver disease

ASPIS Open Symposium 2024
The 4th ASPIS Open Symposium will occur in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 11-12 September 2024, after the 58th Congress of the European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX).
ASPIS Open Symposium is the annual meeting of ASPIS cluster members, formed by the three Horizon 2020 consortia (ONTOX, PrecisionTox, and RISK-HUNT3R).
This exceptional event, which is free of charge, offers a unique opportunity for the wider scientific community to engage in the advancement of safety assessment of chemicals without the use of animal testing.
Day 1, the external-facing part of the event, will begin directly after the EUROTOX on the afternoon of Wednesday, 11 September.
